Bluewater Health received its new Siemens Magnetom Aera MRI magnet at approximately 8 a.m. Monday (April 23) and it was in place in the new MRI suite in Diagnostic Imaging by 4 p.m.
“This is an important and exciting step in making our new MRI operational,” says Dr. Rishi Duggal, Medical Director, Diagnostic Imaging, Bluewater Health. “While we are still a few weeks away from being able to perform scans on the new MRI, we are on schedule and the final steps in preparing it for use have begun.”
Next steps include closing the wall opening that was required to move the unit into the suite, final touch ups in the new suite, commissioning of the new equipment, and simulator training for staff. A media tour and donor reception will be held just prior to the equipment becoming fully functional in mid-May.
In late 2011, Bluewater Health announced its planned purchase of a new MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner. Fundraising began in December with Bluewater Health Foundation’s holiday appeal letter. With the help of lead donor, the Sarnia Construction Association, fundraising is well underway to help secure the $2.8 million required for this critical piece of equipment. Campaign information is available at www.bluewaterhealthfoundation.ca.
The MRI currently in use at Bluewater Health will be decommissioned once the new MRI is operational, and will be ramped down and removed from the hospital in June.
