Olympic bronze medalist Derek Drouin is being welcomed to his native Corunna with more than open arms next week.
The citizens of Corunna and area have organized a parade, scheduled for Wednesday (August 15) beginning at Beckwith at 6:30 p.m. with a party/autograph session following the parade at Antonio's.
Drouin's accomplishment in the high jump event (he tied for third and a bronze with two other competitors) is being recognized by the entire community, say organizers, including Andrew Ysbaert.
"I know he will be so happy to know we were all here at home cheering him on," said Ysbaert in an e-mail. "Even coach Joel Skinner called me from the Olympic Stadium as soon as Derek's event came to an end. Joel wanted to thank everyone from the bottom of his heart for all the support and warm wishes that we sent their way."
Ysbaert said Skinner was "speechless and very emotional about what had just occurred."
