City being asked to lower speed limit in two ‘built up’ areas
Sarnia — By JD Booth on July 15, 2012 at 9:30 pmSarnia City Council is being asked to approve a reduction in speed limit in two built-up areas after at least one resident in each area affected made the request.
Areas affected are the stretch of Confederation between Highway 40 and Ronald Bloore Drive as well as a 780 metre stretch of Blackwell Side Road south of Lakeshore (County Road 7).
If approved, the new speed limit on Confederation would be 50 km/h (from 80 km/h in one stretch and 60 km/h in another). The Blackwell Side Road stretch would reduced from 80 km/h to 50 km/h.
The provincial Highway Traffic Act allows municipalities to change the speed limit on roads that are built up. The report to council, which it will consider at its meeting on Monday (July 16) said Sarnia Police Service as well as several businesses and residents are all in support of the speed limit reductions.

Getting out on Upper Canada Drive you just about get hit with vehicles still speeding up to Modeland Road. Heritage Park Subdivision is filled with former north enders who won’t put up with this. It’s awesome living even with better air and is only going to grow as this is where new, quality built homes, not on swamp land are located. Council had better listen.
Confederation from Blackwell to Modeland should really be 50 kph.
Please think of the Bright’s Grove residents who need to drive to work in Sarnia without spending inappropriate time to get there. Since the bus service which we pay for would take approximately 1.5 hours to reach the Chemical Valley, it is not in the community’s best interest to lower speed limits to appease the new people who have located where they are knowing the existing speed limits. I have lived in the Grove for 30 years, and since it has become part of Sarnia, we have only had negative things happen. Our taxes are very important to the city’s survival so please don’t ignore us!
