In response to what they expect to be an increased need for qualified primary teachers and early childhood educators in the province, Lambton College and the University of Windsor are proceeding with the third year of a phase-in of a program that will see students be able to take all their classes in Sarnia.
Program instructors from Lambton College and the University of Windsor will jointly plan an integrated approach to early learning philosophy, curriculum development and teaching approaches on-site at Lambton College.
The College’s Early Childhood Education program offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience working with children at the on-site Ontario Early Years Centre and the Early Childhood Education Centre. Faculty from the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Education will prepare teacher candidates with a solid theoretical foundation in teaching methodology, combined with teaching practice in the classroom, alongside a qualified teaching professional.
“This program is specifically designed to meet Ontario’s need for well-qualified early learning personnel, said Pat Rogers, Former Dean of the Faculty of Education. “I am delighted that interest in this innovative program is strong enough to allow us to begin offering the program this year.”
“We are happy that we were able to put together this partnership to respond to the needs of our community,” said Wendy Asher, Dean, School of Community Services and Liberal Studies, Lambton College. “This is just the type of enhanced learning that employers are looking for when hiring new graduates.”
Students in the two-year joint program will receive both a Bachelor of Education (Primary-Junior) degree and an Early Childhood Education Diploma. Candidates for the program must have previously completed a three year (minimum) Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Applicants with one or more university courses in the following main curriculum areas will be given preference: English, Mathematics, Science, Canadian Geography/History, Fine Arts or Physical Education.
Lambton College is planning a special Q&A session to be tailored to individual requirements.
Prospective students are invited to book a time with the coordinator to discuss the program. An enrollment advisor will also be available to answer more general questions.
