Lambton OPP confirm two dead, four with minor injuries on Walpole Island
Crime, Lambton County, Walpole Island — By Joe Burd on March 31, 2012 at 9:00 pmLambton OPP and Walpole Island Police have confirmed that two people are dead and four others injured following an early morning roll over collision on Walpole Island.
At 5:30 a.m. Saturday a GMC SUV carrying six occupants is alleged to have attempted to back into a driveway at 487 Altiman Road. The driver failed to negotiate the maneuver and the vehicle tumbled upside down into the water filled ditch beside the driveway.
Three of the occupants were able to get out and three others in the back seat were trapped in the partially submerged vehicle.
Walpole Island Volunteer Fire Fighters, using the Jaws of Life were able to access the three and were able to remove one from the overturned vehicle but were unable to save the others trapped underwater. They were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The four survivors including the driver were taken to the hospital with what are described as minor injuries.
Walpole Island Police, with the assistance of Ontario Provincial Police Technical Collision Investigators (TCI), continue to investigate what caused the fatal collision.
Altiman Road west of Dump Road will remain closed until later this morning.
The investigation is in its early stages and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
