Grandpa Dan was my Grandpa, more importantly he was my friend. He was a good man, and always saw the bright side of any dark cloud. His optimism and self sacrifice for others is a trait I hope to still embody for the rest of my life.
He (as many of you know) was missing his index finger from the first knuckle up. When i was a child i asked him “Grandpa Dan, how did you lose your finger?” He responded “it got bit off by alligators!” *he paused* “but you see that purse your grandma’s got?, That is all that’s left of the dang blasted thing!” or something very much like that.
That is how i choose to remember this great, great man. Hard working, and never an unkind word. Friend who will never stray from your side. Grandfather who would happily and repeatedly sacrifice for those he loved. I may cry for now but the way he lived his life, is so admirable, tears do not suffice nor abate the loss i feel right now. But I’ll smile everytime I think about reptiles. Now that that he is in heaven, I’m sure he’s already made someone else his friend and i’m sure he’s already made someone else laugh.
I’ll miss you Grandpa Dan, Now but not forever, Because I’ll see you soon enough.
