Ontario Provincial Police release results of recently wrapped up Operation Corridor 2012 campaign

With Operation Corridor 2012 wrapping up on Jun. 15, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has released the results of this 24-hour initiative that targeted aggressive commercial drivers and unsafe commercial vehicles.

Over the course of the province-wide campaign, OPP and Ministry of Transportation (MTO) officers laid a total of 372 charges throughout Ontario. During the Operation Corridor campaign, a total of 68 speeding charges were laid, 193 equipment charges were laid and 89 commercial vehicles were taken out of service due to equipment issues or hours of service violations by the OPP and MTO officers.

In comparison, last year during Operation Corridor (2011), a total of 320 charges were laid for various Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act offences.  Of those charges, 86 of them were for speeding.

Operation Corridor is one of six provincial and national traffic safety strategies supported by the OPP’s award-winning Provincial Traffic Safety Program.  The program addresses high-risk behaviours involving occupant restraint, impaired driving, and aggressive driving and distracted driving emphasizing the dedication to the objectives of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015.

Operation Corridor is an annual province-wide commercial vehicle road safety initiative that focuses on high visibility, enforcement and education strategies on highways and roads.

The 24-hour initiative ran from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jun. 14 to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Jun. 15, 2012.
