An as-yet-unnamed truck driver, whose vehicle collided with an SUV on Highway 402 near Airport Road Thursday, has left the truck driver dead and the four passengers in the SUV treated for minor injuries and released from Bluewater Health in Sarnia.

Police say the crash, which took place around 3:30 p.m., occurred when the SUV, travelling eastbound, attempted to pass the truck.

At some point, the transport truck moved towards the passing lane and collided with the SUV, causing it to roll several times into the median. The ransport left the roadway and struck a tree.

Police say the cab of the transport truck caught fire but the heat of the fire prevented passersby who stopped to assist from saving the driver.  The driver, whose name will not be released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 402 were closed while the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation team did its work.
