OPP say calls seeking remote computer access most likely fraudulent
Lambton County — By JD Booth on November 21, 2011 at 6:19 pm
Lambton OPP are warning residents to be extremely cautious about giving access to their computer as the result of a phone call.
Police say Lambton County residents are still reporting being contacted over the telephone by people purporting to be anti virus company representatives. An example of the conversation includes the representative telling the person their computer is running slow or has viruses. They then offer to repair the computer remotely over the Internet and the person allows the caller to have access. Payment for the services is handled via credit card.
"When you allow a third party to download software or remotely access your computer, they could be adding malicious software that will capture personal information," said the OPP in a media release. "Please consider contacting a local and reputable repair service if you are having difficulties with your computers."
