Police pursuit leads to arrest of two males, gun and drugs recovered

On Apr. 5 a Sarnia Police COPPS officer spotted a van carrying two males traveling on Cardiff Drive with an expired validation sticker on the license plate. The officer pulled the vehicle over at about 11:20 a.m. and asked the driver for his license and registration. Almost immediately, the passenger inside the van began yelling at the officer and shouting expletives.

The officer went back to his cruiser to check the driver’s status when the driver and vehicle suddenly took off and attempted to leave the area. The van proceeded to Wellington Street at high speed and the cruiser followed with roof lights activated. The van continued, going thru a red light at Finch and Wellington as the cruiser continued its pursuit with roof lights and siren activated.

The van stopped eventually stopped near Brimwood and the male passenger immediately fled between two nearby homes. The driver was arrested for Flight from Police and Dangerous Driving. At that point, police said the male passenger suddenly re-appeared, yelling at the officer while he continued to walk northbound on Finch.

The officer looked in the van and observed drugs in plain view which clinched grounds for the arrest of the male passenger. Other officers converged on the area to offer assistance.

A neighbour witnessed the male passenger who had fled tossing a bag into a backyard of a residence on Brimwood. Police found a semi-automatic handgun in the passenger’s bag.

Police recovered a total of 18 tablets of Dilaudid, 82 milligrams of methadone and 7 grams of methamphetamine as well as over $800 in cash.

Both men face a multitude of charges including Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Careless Use of a Firearm, Carry Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Possession of a Firearm Without Being the Holder of a License, Possession of a Firearm While Prohibited and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon Obtained by Crime.

A 34-year-old Sarnia man and a 45-year-old Corunna man remain in custody awaiting bail hearings.
