Walpole Island Police say they made an arrest on Dec. 29 after responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the area of the boat lunch on Squirrel Island Road.

A 62-year-old man who is a member of the Moravian of the Thames First Nation (south of Bothwell and east of Chatham-Kent) remains in custody and is awaiting bail on various charges, including flight from police. The accused is said to have had some 120 bottles (each 1.75 litres) of assorted liquor on his possession. He is also charged with racing a motor vehicle and driving while under suspension.

The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m., included the police making attempts to stop a van allegedly driving by the accused. After 15 minutes the van became stuck on Squirrel Island Road and an arrest was made.
