Lambton County will lend St. Clair Child & Youth Services the $15,000 it needs to maintain children's mental health services during the next few weeks, responding to a motion brought forward by Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, who became aware of the shortfall in the group's funding.
But members of Lambton County Council, meeting for the last time before newly elected councils take their seats Dec. 1, made it clear that they expect the Local Health Integration Network to reimburse the county for the funds.
Council also "strongly encouraged" the Ministry of Child and Youth Services, which funds St Clair Child & Youth, to "evaluate and adjust their funding formulas regarding children's mental health to focus less on population and more so on economies of scale."
Council councillor Bev Macdougall expressed concern that the current funding formula does not reflect the urban/rural nature of the area, prompting the motion urging a change in the formula.
