Lawn bowling club celebrates 110th anniversary

It was a great celebration of 110 years of lawn bowling play in Sarnia when a special anniversary tournament was held here on the holiday Monday, Aug. 1.

Lawn bowling is one of the oldest continuous sporting activities in the city, with the game being played every year at various sites since the club was originally founded in 1906. The anniversary tournament was held at the club’s current home in Germain Park, with special sponsorship from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793. The tournament format was open trebles, with 19 teams (57 bowlers) taking part from around Southwestern Ontario.

The Sarnia team of Craig Dorey, Rebecca McQueen and Julie Foley prevailed after three games of play to take top honours. Second place went to Steve, Katie and Barb Schuknecht of Chesley, with third place won by Terry, Matt and Ron Little of Ridgetown.

A few former bowlers and friends of the club dropped by in the afternoon to watch the play, renew old friendships and enjoy a piece of anniversary cake.

The results of the tournament were as follows:

1st place – Craig Dorey, Rebecca McQueen, Julie Foley – Sarnia

2nd place – Steve Schuknecht, Katie Schuknecht, Barb Schuknecht – Chesley

3rd place – Terry Little, Matt Little, Ron Little – Ridgetown
