An Enniskillen Township couple adorns the cover of the 2011 Faces of Farming calendar published to showcase 12 Ontario farmers and to put a face on the people who produce food in this province.
Jack and Christine Greydanus own and operate a farm on LaSalle Line, northeast of Petrolia where they raise roosters and hens and grow peppers in their greenhouse.
Two other local stories are included in the calendar. Katherine Zurczak works on a pig farm near Watford and Anthony and Marj Sjaarda tend to more than 1,000 goats on their farm near Wyoming.
"Less than two per cent of Canadians farm, so this is our way of introducing you to some of our farmers and letting them tell the story behind our food," says John Maaskant, chicken farmer and Chair of the Ontario Farm Animal Council (OFAC), the organization behind the project. "Our surveys have shown that 95% of Canadians know very little about where their food comes from, but most are interested in learning more–especially directly from a farmer."
The calendar can be purchased at any of the 41 TSC stores throughout Ontario and it is also available through the OFAC office in Guelph, by using the online order form www.ofac.org or by calling 519-837-1326.
