The Rummage Sale
Relay for Life will be hosting a rummage sale this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at Temple Baptist Church in Sarnia. Multiple tables will be set up selling items to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“A number of teams come out with their garage sale, rummage sale, bake sale, BBQ, and sell their items and that’s part of their fundraising efforts,” said Paula McKinlay, community fundraising specialist with the Canadian Cancer Society.
Any money made at the rummage sale will go towards Sarnia-Lambton Relay for Life’s $160,000 fundraising goal. A goal that matches the amount of money raised last year.
Over the past 16 years, Sarnia-Lambton Relay for Life has raised over 3.3 million dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society, said McKinlay.
The Main Event
The 16th annual Sarnia-Lambton Relay for Life event will take place on June 16th at Sarnia’s Clearwater Arena park.
Participants are encouraged to sign up as team and collect fundraising pledges for the 6 hour walking event.
“The event is filled with things you don’t find in other events,” said McKinlay.
There is a cancer survivor lap, a caretaker lap, and a luminary lap that encourages walkers to hold a candle signifying a loved-one who lost a battle with cancer. This year there will be a special Canada 150 lap, a Disney lap, a glow lap, and an 80s lap.
“The teams get creative and dress up during those laps,” McKinlay said. “There’s fun in fundraising all throughout the night.”
Last year, 432 Relay for Life events across the country raised more than 28 million dollars, according to the Relay for Life website
