The Sarnia Legionnaires used an almost all-rookie lineup Tuesday as they battled the Chatham Maroons to a 3-3 deadlock in Western Jr. ‘B’ hockey exhibition action.
Coach Mark Davis had just two veterans dressed – Zach Vanderwal and Brock Perry – compared to eight Maroon returnees.
The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period at Sarnia Arena, thanks to goals by Kevin Gursoy and Nolan Vandenboorn.
But Sarnia squared matters in the middle frame, thanks to tallies from Owen Routhleut and Joel Pavey.
Routhleut’s marker came on a great effort in which he stripped the puck from a Chatham player and barged into the clear before rifing a drive under the crossbar. Pavey, meanwhile, connected with a backhander from close range.
In the final stanza the Legion crew took its only lead of the contest when Corey Easton whipped home a low drive while standing at the side of the cage.
Chatham’s Breaden Henderson tied the game in the final minute of play with a powerplay marker.
The Maroons outshot the Legionnaires 49-27.
Three goalies guarded the twine for Sarnia, including Josh Diamond, Ryan Knowles and Zach Mazur and all three were solid.
