The Sarnia Sting picked up their third consecutive victory with a 6-5 win over the visiting Saginaw Spirit on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Sting take a 3-2 season series lead and improve to 24-18-5-1 on the year. With 54 points on the campaign, the Sting are now just 4 points back of the Kitchener Rangers for 6th in the OHL’s Western Conference.
The Sting’s top line of Jordan Kyrou, Troy Lajeunesse and Drake Rymsha combined for 5 goals and 9 points in the contest. Lajeunesse, who was the game’s first star, registered two goals and one assist in the game. The Dokis First Nations native picked up his 100th career OHL point on his second goal of the game.
After a scoreless first period, Drake Rymsha opened the scoring with his 19th of the season at 6:20 of the second stanza. Jordan Kyrou and Jeff King were credited with the helpers.
The Spirit responded with the next two goals; both coming on the man-advantage. Kreis and Bennett found the net for Saginaw to give them a 2-1 lead.
Troy Lajeunesse found the net twice before Sean Josling rounded out the second period scoring with his 7th of the season. The goal was Josling’s 3rd in the last two games.
Sting captain, Kevin Spinozzi and starting goaltender, Justin Fazio both left the game during the middle frame. First, it was Spinozzi who was handed a game-misconduct for a hit to the head. Then, in the latter stages of the period, Justin Fazio was knocked into the goal and had to leave due to injury. Aidan Hughes finished the game in goal for the Sting.
Kris Bennett netted his second of the game midway through the third period to get the Spirit within one. Moments after that, Jordan Kyrou would score with the backhand to regain the two-goal lead.
Kyrou would score his 20th of the season while Gilmour and Hodgson would each add singles for the Spirit to round out the scoring.
